Learning through Movement/ Yoga
Storefront for Somatic Practice
Cambridge
4.13.2017-5.18.2017
A 6-week class for children ages 3-7 years exploring yoga through story and song. We will practice a variety of poses inspired by the natural world, human history and mythology. This series supports children as they learn to quiet and direct their own movement, attention and imagination. Through increased awareness of breathing and vocal range, children will learn to modulate their behavior and comfortably transition between different modes of activity including rest. They will come to listen, observe, follow and model, and eventually incorporate what they have learned – their own interpretation of various movements – into their own choreography and embodied storytelling. As with other Learning through Movement classes, direction and guidance will come from other students as well as adults in the studio.
Led by artist Helen Singh-Miller, a certified practitioner of the Feldenkrais Method of somatic education with 20 years of experience teaching art, writing and environmental education to children and young adults in school and afterschool. Helen practices Yoga at the Ashtanga Yoga Boston shala. Ashtanga Yoga Boston shares the space with the Storefront for Somatic Practice in the afternoon.
