Storefront for Somatic Practice
11.9.16 - 12.21.16
Feldenkrais Awareness Through Movement® (ATM) lessons are verbally guided explorations of the biological patterns underlying everyday movement. This 6-week series will be taught by Helen Miller and focus on the integration of vision and perception into basic actions like rolling, sitting and walking. We will draw on lessons developed by David Webber in Seeing Clearly® and Sheryl Field in her Fundamental and Touchstone series of ATMs.
Our eyes, which go a long way in connecting us to the outside world, have inner lives as well, bodies of their own and networks of internal connections. According to Milton Erickson, psychiatrist and hypnotherapist, “the conscious mind is almost entirely housed in the muscles of the eyes.” In this ATM series, we will set up a variety of situations and helpful constraints, “feeling our conscious minds through the mediation of our hands and eyes,” as Webber describes a key moment in one of his eye lessons. We will explore the conscious and less conscious movements of our hands and eye muscles along with those of our hips, shoulders, legs, feet, toes….
